OK you've sold me. When you did the factoring in the previous lesson I thought that seemed odd, but the light bulb just went on in this one. You are a genius.

One little trickette to mention somewhere

(n+1)^2 = n^2 + n + (n+1)

(n+2)^2 = n^2 +n+n + (n+2) + (n+2) = n^2 + 2n +2(n+2) = n^2+2(n+2+n)

So if you know 12x12=144 then 13x13 = 144 + 12 + 13 and 14x14=144+2x(12+14)

And relatedly for (n-1)^2 (and (n-2)^2 but that's probably not as useful )

So if you know 12x12=144, 16x16=256 and 20x20=400 then you can quite easily calculate 13x13, 14x14 15x15 17x17 18x18 and 19x19.

Oh and because lots of people ask why do you care? explain this is how you order carpet or floor tiling (or wall paper....) and get enough to cover

Hallelujah, a convert!! LOL. And I don't answer that question with my tutoring students by giving them specific, practical answers. I tell them they will understand reality and be someone who is significantly more difficult to take advantage of than average.
