Thank you so much; this made my morning. What you say here resonates with me in part because there are so many respects where New England is fundamentally a very different country from the South. Perhaps our present division shouldn't be a surprise. Perhaps the fact that America managed to be unified for as long as we did is the real surprise.
You have a book in you, Holly - whether novel or memoir, it's there waiting to be written, and best of all you have the writing skills along with lived experience to write it...or who knows, many books.
How interesting that you have two widely disparate talents - math and writing...what a blessing!
And you've plenty of audacity to propel you toward whatever aspirations you have.
Thank you for these kind words. Part of my reason for leaving Twitter is that I want to write more. Twitter was using up some of my writing energy in ways that provided a fast hit of dopamine but weren’t really satisfying. Like junk food, if that makes sense. I have an idea for a novel. If I am able to find a new job soon, I will quit my side hustles and work on it more consistently. 🤞🏻
Leaving Twitter is probably one of the wisest decisions you've made. Your comparison to junk food hits the target.
Could my tiny company have a place for your skills, Holly? I'm going to have to replace myself in the near future (by next March or sooner), and believe me you could do my job with ease. I'm the president and business manager who wears all the hats of running a multi-million dollar 40 year old manufacturing and wholesale marketing business, performing the gamut from mundane bookkeeping to broad range written communication. My weakness is a very poor grasp of math analytics, which falls in your area of expertise. On the pro side, I work from home and at a distance from the actual manufacturing facility. Most communication is done by text or email, and I make a pretty decent 6 figure salary. No boss. No HR. Paid health and dental Insurance, but maybe not quite as good as you might need, and you could do my job fairly easily right from where you are. Best of all, my job only requires an average of about 25 hours a week at the busiest part of the season. Bonus - company owner is a great guy, generous and trusting almost to a fault. 🤔
Your world view has changed because you have changed. You’ve grown up, had a vast amount of experiences, found a great therapist, and have found a place where your mind and body can be calm and unafraid. You are challenging yourself to think a different way, to see things differently, and to look at things as they actually are. That is a gift and a rarity. It is also why I enjoy reading your blog.
Yep going around thinking you are being treated poorly because you are xyz is just negative expected value! All it does is make you self conscious and doubt yourself! I wish more people realized this and stopped seeing themselves as a victim, it is so freeing!
And I'm sure this ideology has physical consequences as well. The increased stress I'm sure is immunosuppressive.

For a first-order tire check, all you need is a penny. See, e.g., https://www.firestonecompleteautocare.com/blog/tires/how-to-check-tire-tread-depth-with-penny/
This has been passed down from father to son (and, occasionally, daughter) for generations …

Thank you so much! What lovely sentiments. <3

Thanks for the great post!
The freedom to not assume another’s motives/intentions in imperfect encounters. Is there a word for that?
I think prior to Wokeness this was called "adulthood." Nowadays they probably call it "privilege," LMAO.
