You are one of the sanest people I “know.” it is your raw authenticity that is so attractive. That is a gem so rare it is noteworthy whenever discovered.
During the 60’s my idol was Mr Spock. To become as much like him as possible was my goal. 🤪 good God I must’ve been fun to watch back then.
I discovered you around Feburary of last year, and found you to be quite interesting. I enjoy the culture-war, pop culture, and anti-woke takes the most, so please keep at this (as long as your mind is in a good place).
It’s interesting that you mentioned that so many people seem to like the more spicy aspects of your personality. For what it’s worth, I actually like those aspects the least. But overall, I find you significantly more likable than not, probably because you tell the truth without pulling punches, and I think that is one of the most admirable qualities a person can have. (It’s also one of the most despised by many people.)
On the subject of learning what you feel by writing, this is actually how I started writing my book. You probably won’t get to see it anytime soon, since even I expect it to take more than a decade more to write. But only because I’m barely surviving working a full-time job.
“So I work on it only when I’m procrastinating something else. Which makes it feel safe, because it’s less scary than whatever I’m avoiding. I’ve tricked myself into writing with reverse dread. It almost works.
(Now I remember why I avoided writing about writing. This is humiliating.)”
I’m not sure what’s humiliating about this? I thought that was a pretty standard technique for getting something done that one would rather not do; do it as a way to avoid doing something even more unpleasant/scary/whatever.
When I first discovered your substack, you said in an article that you wrote to help clarify the subject in your own mind, IIRC, and that stuck with me. Whenever I make a comment, I ask myself if it is relevant, on point, and without malice. (I have a tendency toward sarcasm!) If all of those items survive scrutiny, I'll press post. Thus far I've only had to retract one post, which for me is remarkable!
On a first initial read, I haven’t found what I’m looking for. I guess what I was looking for was some kind of formula or “I was really popular with this group and they followed me to Substack.”
I want to make money from writing, but I know that I’m different from most people and have few shared interest. Therefore, I don’t gain any traction and I’m not “known“ for any one specific thing, so I don’t have a vertical.
Thank you for writing this article at my prompting, even if I was only the most recent person to ask for it

May your muse never desert you.

Let me know if Josh got the money I
sent both of you. After all, I've never
had a reason to send anything to
Vermont before. And I'll try to send
something toward the end of the year
for both of you again.

Thanks for teaching an old dog a new trick!
“I wouldn’t be panhandling on Twitter by Thursday.” Well thank God for that as it sounds really unpleasant and possibly demeaning.
