I can't tell you how much I appreciate this. I have ordered his book and it will be here Thursday. I am a former foster parent and am fortunate enough that we still have a relationship with our foster daughter. I am always looking for anything that will help me continue to help her and have a good relationship with her.
I bought Mr. Henderson's book and will definitely read it. My initial thought is that it will probably make me appreciate my upbring even more than I do already. Thank you for bringing the book up in your substack.
I used to think my childhood was not all that great. My parents had kids late in life. They were in their early forties when I was born in 1953, the youngest with three sisters and we lived in the country so no kids my age to play with but with parents that really cared. Looking back on it growing up in those circumstance was a LOT better than I thought at the time and the insight you provide with articles like this one sharpen that perspective even more.
Holly, thank you for this review! I have ordered the book, taken notes from your review, and see this as part of my education for understanding my granddaughter who is now age 18. Your insights from the book whet my appetite for reading the whole thing!
I do have one question though that maybe you can help me with. You refer to right wing people with the luxury beliefs and not seeing the role of parents and upbringing in hire kids do in life, which I don’t see at all in the folks I hang out with, who happen to be generally right off center. I gather your experience is different?
Loved this the first time, loved reading it again. Thank you.
