Here in Burlington, Vermont, the government is engaged in flagrant viewpoint discrimination. See this sticker? Notice the graffiti it’s placed on top of.
Of the two people involved in placing graffiti on this piece of public property, the government is only prosecuting one. Can you guess which one?
I’ve written before about the courageous men who put reality-affirming stickers on public property in Burlington (which is part of a long-established tradition; Burlington has tens of thousands of stickers expressing views of all sorts), as well as about the way the city government is singling them out in acts of actual stochastic terrorism. My friend Josh has covered this at length on his Disaffected podcast; there’s a lot of city council footage here, which will let you verify that I am in no way exaggerating. This is an actual, announced, official government hunt for witches who don’t practice the state’s preferred religion of gender ideology.
I’ve also written about the insanity of COVID hysteria in this very blue area, which will give you some context for what it’s like to essentially live in a real-life version of progressive Twitter—and how much courage it takes to stand up and fight. The men who are fighting deserve support, which is why I’m letting you know what’s happening.
The target of government oppression in this case is Bill Oetjen, a gentleman (part of the sticker brigade made up of my friends and their friends) who’s been cited and slapped with $1200 in fines by the governmental enforcers of gender ideology. He’s not paying. He’s fighting. But this takes lawyers, and the reality is that even principled, civil-liberty-focused attorneys who waive their fees to help still have to pay their staff. This is partly why fighting this evil is so difficult—even the best-case scenario, of pro-bono attorneys who give a damn about the Constitution, can get expensive.
There’s a givesendgo here that you can donate to, in order to help get the legal precedent we need that free speech is for everyone, not just people whose opinions the government likes.
If you can donate, please do and thank you. If you can’t, could you spread the link to your networks?
Thanks in advance. I’ll write a future post updating on the court case!
About Me and My Substack: I’m a data scientist whose great love is mathematics, but I also enjoy writing. My posts are mostly cultural takes from a broadly anti-Woke perspective—yes, I’m one of those annoying classical liberals who would’ve been considered on the left until ten seconds ago. Lately I’ve regained a childhood love of reading and started publishing book reviews. My most widely useful essay may be this one, about how to resist the demon of self-termination.
Paid subscribers get access to occasional creative writing posts, special features, and can leave comments.
I used to be poor, so this Substack has a standing policy: if you want a paid subscription but cannot afford one, email me at hollymathnerd at gmail dot com and I’ll give you a freebie.
Thank you very much for alerting me about Bill Oetjen's struggle for free speech. I think it would help to publish this piece in the Vermont Daily Chronicle so that more people know about this and contribute to Oetjen's GiveSendGo campaign.
Glad to help the furtherance of free speech!
