Since leaving Twitter several weeks ago, I’ve been reading about and adopting the philosophy of digital minimalism. Cal Newport’s book of the same name is absolutely fabulous. I won’t do you the disservice of trying to summarize it here. Rather, you should read it as soon as possible.
Applying its principles will look different for each person, based on the particular circumstances of his/her life. The author sets a high bar for allowing a digital tool back into one’s life (after a period of abstention, to the fullest extent possible, as a kind of detox). Here is what cleared the bar after a serious re-thinking of the role digital tools play in my own life. These provide me with tangible service and help towards maximizing my progress towards my own goals and the time I spend on what’s important to me. I think some of them might be useful to some of you, but I highly recommend clearing out the digital detritus first.
